Existing MathPOWER Programs/Services:
- Coaching and Professional
Development -- MathPOWER 's coaches support and assist
classroom teachers in a variety of ways, as the teachers themselves become
more comfortable with teaching a more inquiry-based curriculum.
- Algebra Plus Summer
Camp -- MathPOWER's Algebra Plus Summer Camp at Northeastern
University provides an opportunity for students in grades 6-9 to gain confidence
and competence in their mathematical skills, acquire a love for learning,
and spend time engaging in educational activities that raise their levels
of aspiration and preparation for postsecondary education or career entry.
- Out-of-School-Time
Program Development -- A relatively new program for MathPOWER,
this project aims to increase the effectiveness and productivity of after-school
or out-of-school-time programs by improving their staffs’ ability to support
students' academic, personal, and social development.
Upcoming MathPOWER Initiatives:
- Mathematics Intervention Program – Mathematics is cumulative and requires that students have a strong foundation in concepts before moving on to more difficult concepts. This program will be launched in the 2007-2008 school year in one Middle and one Elementary school in the Boston Public School (BPS) system with the goal of assisting classroom teachers in deepening their understanding of math in order to better understand students’ progress as well as their misperceptions. With this knowledge, teachers will have increased skills and an enhanced understanding of how to help students learn.
- Advocacy Through Building Impact – This initiative aims to advance the efforts and goals of the organization by continuing its participation with Community Partners, educating the community (students, parents, schools, educational professionals, etc) about the significance of mathematical literacy, and building greater intervention within the BPS system.
