MathSTAR's After School Program is accepting applications, now at two locations!
The MathSTARS’s after-school program provides an environment that promotes academic success, personal development, and the skills needed to complete a college education.
The MathPOWER staff has developed an after-school program model that enhances a student’s overall well-being and provides the instructional assistance students need to complete their homework. Our approach includes helping students develop critical thinking skills that extend beyond academics.
In addition to providing individualized tutoring, we offer activities for students that link their growing math skills with real life applications, a process that enables them to see math as something more than an abstract notion.
Our college students serve as mentors and their daily interactions with students assist them in developing their interpersonal skills and self-image. Through team building activities, we instill the belief in our students that each of us plays a role in creating our futures, including the communities we live in.
Our results speak volumes about the role that quality after-school programs can play in helping students succeed! Students who attended our after-school program this year have seen their math scores rise, they have made the honor roll for the first time, and they have a more positive outlook on learning and school! Because of our peer and mentor support system, students look forward to attending our after-school program every day and they consider themselves part of a community working together to solve problems.
With such a successful first year, MathPOWER is pleased to announce the opening of our second after-school program that will be located at the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club in Roxbury, near Dudley Station. Our new site promises to provide students with a learning environment that offers more than tutoring, similar to our after-school program located at the Sportsmen’s Tennis Club in Dorchester.
The MathSTARS/Yawkey program opens in September 2009 and will run through the 2009-2010 school year. Both sites offer services Monday through Thursday; the hours at our Sportsmen’s site are from 3:00-6:00 p.m. and the hours at the Yawkey site are from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Similar to our program at Sportsmen’s, we offer individual tutoring, team and community building projects, mentoring, and fun activities aimed at promoting self-image and sportsmanship.
We encourage you to enroll now while we still have space available. Ms. Doherty, our Director of After-School Programs, can assist you in enrolling your child in either program. Students entering 6th – 9th grade are welcome at each site, and they can also initiate contact with Ms. Doherty to learn more about the program. Ms. Doherty may be reached at 617.373.6550 or via email at MathPowerAfterSchool@gmail.com.
