Math*STARS After School Program

MISSION
The Mission of Math*STARS Afterschool Program is to provide a safe space for Boston urban youth to excel in mathematics and reading, and to develop strength and creativity to promote their own resiliency. With the services and support provided by MathPOWER-trained tutors, Math*STARS offers a unique out-of-school time experience for students in grades 6-9 by providing one-on-one tutoring, weekly skills-building workshops, and peer mentoring and guidance.

In partnership with local trusted community centers, Math*STARS plays a crucial role in ensuring Boston urban youth have the academic skills, confidence, and self-efficacy to thrive in middle- and high-school, and successfully navigate into higher education.

Math*STARS provides an after-school environment that promotes academic success, personal development, and the skills that are important to prepare one for college. Math*STARS creates a bridge between students’ school day and their out-of-school time by providing:

  • Homework assistance in both math and literacy subject areas
  • Activities in which students can tie their growing math skills to real-life applications
  • Academic and emotional support in an effort to boost self-esteem and self-efficacy
  • Opportunities to excel through individual and group work in math, science, art, and civics
  • Mentoring by local college students and adult volunteers
  • Communication between student’s schools and Math*STARS to effectively target gaps in learning or understanding
  • Structured recreation activities with trained professionals

Throughout each session, students receive:

  • 72 hours of academic instruction
  • 24 hours of recreational activities
  • GOAL:
We aim to provide Boston Public School students with the necessary advanced math problem-solving skills to successfully navigate through middle and high school academics as a means of supporting their pursuit of higher education. We also strive to provide a safe and secure after school environment that offers all of the resources and support for students to learn and enhance not only in their math skills but across all levels of adolescent growth.
