About

MathPOWER, originally named Boston Algebra in Middle School (AIMS) Project, was founded in 1989. Inspired by the work of civil rights activist Robert Moses, MathPOWER aims to create more effective ways to teach mathematics to urban children. The increasing importance of math literacy combined with the widening achievement gap between more privileged school children and urban school children in Boston have created the need for MathPOWER. The goals of the organization are to equalize the quality of educational opportunities for all youth and promote advanced mathematical learning in urban schools.

MathPOWER works within the diverse neighborhoods of Boston:

  • Of the 57,000 Boston Public School (BPS) students, 42% are Black, 35% are
Hispanic, 14% are White, and 9% are Asian
  • BPS Class of 2006 had a 59% graduation rate
  • BPS average scores on the SAT I tests (Critical Reading, Mathematics, and
Writing) for the Class of 2006 fall below the State and US averages
  • Only 53% of BPS students received an Advanced or Proficient rating on the
Mathematics portion of the statewide standardized test (MCAS)

Mission

MathPOWER is dedicated to taking a comprehensive approach to developing both proficiency in advanced mathematics and personal resiliency as vehicles to bring about transformational change in the lives of urban youth. Our mission isn't just about students succeeding in math; it is about launching students on successful paths to pursue and complete a post-secondary education. MathPOWER envisions a world in which all students achieve competency in advanced mathematics which serves as a gateway to lifelong learning and a productive career.

Vision

MathPOWER envisions a world in which all students achieve competency in advanced mathematics, a toolkit that is essential for a productive career and for lifelong learning.

Existing MathPOWER Programs/Services:

  • Coaching and Professional Development -- In conjunction with The STEM Center, this program aims to train teachers in the skills necessary to improve their students learning in mathematics. The seminars are split into individual modules, each focusing on a specific unit, so that teachers can choose those that are of the most interest to them. The professional development program emphasizes the five strands leading to math proficiency: understanding, computing, applying, reasoning and engaging.
  • Algebra Plus Summer Academy -- MathPOWER's Algebra Plus Summer Academy at Northeastern University provides an opportunity for students in grades 6-9 to gain confidence and competence in their mathematical skills, acquire a love for learning, and spend time engaging in educational activities that raise their levels of aspiration and preparation for postsecondary education or career entry.
  • Math*STARS' Serve and Return after school program -- This relatively new project for MathPOWER aims to provide children tutoring on their homework as well as instruction on more advanced math to prepare your child for the upcoming school year. The program also offers tennis lessons in an effort to boost students self confidence in a safe and secure after school environment.
  • Mathematics Intervention Program: The program aims to provide teachers with pedagogical strategies in an effort to promote a deeper understanding of mathematics in Boston public schools. Teachers involved in the program work individually with leaders at MathPOWER to develop tools to assess the success rate of new teaching methods and to enhance professional judgment about class content and student’s abilities.

Upcoming MathPOWER Initiatives:

  • Advocacy Through Building Impact – This initiative aims to advance the efforts and goals of the organization by continuing its participation with Community Partners, educating the community (students, parents, schools, educational professionals, etc) about the significance of mathematical literacy, and building greater intervention within the BPS system.

How Can You Help?

MathPOWER’s mission is critical to supporting students’ success in developing mathematical competency within the Boston Public Schools. There are many ways in which you can assist our organization. Financial support is critical, as well as Board or volunteer support in the areas of fundraising, marketing, evaluation, advocacy, and building impact. There are also job and volunteer opportunities for interested and qualified candidates who realize the importance of math literacy and the promotion of healthy learning environments for urban education.
